The Great Purpose Charade

Four years of data. One persistent finding: the sector has learned the language of purpose and culture but not yet the practice.

Does This Sound Familiar?

The Language of Same is Everywhere.

"Empowering our clients and communities to thrive by delivering trusted legal solutions with commercial clarity and expertise, helping them navigate complexity and realise their ambitions in a changing world."

That is not a real purpose statement. It is a composite built from the most common language used across the top 50 law firms in our study. 84% of firms use one of just five generic templates. The language of purpose is everywhere. The distinctiveness it was supposed to create is not.

Research Framework

Which Firm Are You?

Our research identifies four recognisable archetypes each with a distinct commercial profile and a different set of risks and opportunities.

The Absent (22%)

No articulated purpose beyond service offering. Invisible to purpose-led talent and clients.

The Declarative (38%)

Purpose exists on paper but not in practice. The largest group — and the most commercially exposed.

The Aspirational (28%)

Purpose exists on paper but not in practice. The largest group — and the most commercially exposed.

The Integrated (12%)

Purpose genuinely operational across leadership, hiring, clients and ESG. The commercial benchmark.
